In November 2015, Amazon opened its first physical shop permanently open and it tastes like more. The US company wants to start more physical shops. Amazon's ambition is to open an estimated three to four hundred shops, reports The Wall Street Journal.
The news written in the newspaper is based on an interview with Sandeep Mathrani, the top executive of shopping centre operator General Growth Properties in the US. Mathrani told The Wall Street Journal, "Amazon is opening physical bookstores. I understand they want to open three hundred to four hundred in total." Exactly what Mathrani is basing his information on is not entirely clear. Amazon would not comment on the top executive's statements.
Long term
Actually launching the hundreds of physical shops is going to take Amazon years anyway, The Wall Street Journal has calculated. The e-commerce company has to start from scratch, including finding good locations, drawing up contracts and fully setting up the shops including staff.
Amazon earlier offline
Amazon wants to offer real service to customers in shops. This will allow consumers, who currently order online, to browse books and test Amazon's mobile devices. Earlier, Amazon had a drop-off point for products ordered online located in three different universities. Besides those pick-up points, the e-commerce company also owns an unmanned pick-up warehouse in New York and customers can buy products for their e-reader at various airports.
