Underpayment is still frequent in freight transport. The cabinet wants to crack down on this and Minister Asscher of Social Affairs and Employment has thus submitted a bill to the Council of State. The minister wants to tighten the rules to combat sham constructions and prevent underpayment.
A freight transport worker, when the change in the law is introduced, will not only be able to sue his employer, but also hold the client or others liable if underpayment occurs.
Unfair competition
This will create more fair competition and Asscher hopes the change will improve working conditions. If these are better observed, unfair situations for workers will no longer occur and when they do, the client can be held accountable.
Honesty pays
To the NOS, Asscher informs: "In a decent labour market, decent companies must be given a chance, which simply pay according to the agreements." Through better compliance with the rules, employment agencies that underpay will soon disappear. "Neat drivers should not be competed away by people who are paid far below Dutch wages."
