Belgium will maintain the border controls it has put in place to
for at least another ten days. The Ministry of the Interior
has applied for extensions to this end.
Checks at the French coast came into effect on 23 February, following the decision
to break up the refugee camp in Calais. The Belgian government
wanted to prevent migrants who had initially intended to make the crossing from Calais
to the United Kingdom would now try again via Zeebrugge.
Border checks permitted for a limited period
The Belgian Ministry of the Interior had to apply for an extension
because the European Commission only permits border controls for a short period
. Investigations are currently underway to determine what should happen after the ten-day extension
. “We must prevent these refugees, who do not wish to
in Belgium anyway, from being deported from the country,” says a
spokesperson for the ministry.
