Dutch inland shipping can still take over a quarter of road transport. Achieving this will cut CO2 emissions by 30 per cent, according to the Central Bureau for Rhine and Inland Navigation (CBRB). Neighbouring countries Belgium, Germany and France would also still have room to further optimise inland shipping to take pressure off road transport.
With these statements, the CBRB responds to an appeal by Dutch MEP Wim van de Camp for more use of inland shipping as a transport mode
Doubling inland shipping
Eurostat figures show that inland shipping has been snatching market share from European road transport for some time. Yet the majority of transport still takes place by road. According to the CBRB, there is still enough room on the waterways in the Netherlands for transport to double. If inland shipping took over a quarter of road transport, the number of truck movements would decrease by 4 million.
