Blokker needs to focus more on logistics if it wants to return to profit. So says supply chain director Koen van Doorn in the magazine of shippers' organisation EVO. In particular, the supply chain is going through a shake-up.

Supply chain
According to Van Doorn, buyers at Blokker were sent out several years ago with the aim of making sufficient purchases. "So what did those guys do? They travelled to China and bought containers full of products," Van Doorn explains. If stuff didn't sell, they could be thrown away. "The margins were relatively high, so the profits were soon in. In today's times, we no longer get away with that. It is becoming more and more urgent to buy smart."

Integral approach to procurement
Van Doorn is now aiming for a more integral approach to procurement. A renewed category management organisation will be launched in March. The position of current buyers will be replaced by that of category manager. They can apply internally for this. After that, Blokker will focus on making agreements with suppliers and winning back consumers. "Blokker has to become an appealing shop again. People don't think it's cool to walk down the street with a Blokker bag. But that's where we want to get back to," he concludes in the trade journal.
