Construction of the distribution centre is still in full swing, but bol.com
is already exploring the possibility of doubling the floor area of the building in Waalwijk
. To this end, the Dutch e-commerce giant has taken an option on an adjacent
plot of 8.3 hectares.
The distribution centre currently under construction covers an
area of 50,000 square metres. This should provide sufficient space for the time being
, but given the growth of recent years, the e-tailer expects that an expansion will be necessary in two to three years’ time. The
new plot offers space for a building of the same size. This would allow
bol.com, which previously won awards for its sustainable distribution centre, would
Waalwijk.
Construction of the distribution centre began in February.
In May, the building was named the ‘most sustainable
distribution centre in the Netherlands’. Among other things, it utilises wind turbines situated next to the
centre to supply energy. The building is also fully
CO₂-neutral, achieved in part through the use of thermal storage systems in
combination with heat pumps. Collected rainwater is used to
flushing toilets and urinals. Employees who travel by electric car,
scooter or bicycle can charge their vehicles. In addition, consideration has also been given to
animals, with the installation of, amongst other things, nesting boxes for various
bird species, heated bat roosts and solitary beehives.
