In the run-up to the holidays, bol.com breaks all records. During the holidays, many consumers order Sinterklaas and Christmas gifts online. At the online shop, this now happens on average at 10 items per second. Expectations are that bol.com will process more than 3 million presents this Sinterklaas period.
Expectations exceeded
The orders flow in mainly on the Monday before Saint Nicholas celebrates, which is traditionally the busiest day. At the peak of the rush, ten items are ordered every second and processed at the distribution centre. More than 300,000 ordered items leave the online giant's warehouse after a busy day.
Extreme expectations exceeded
Bol.com managing director Daniel Ropers is watching his eyes and is extremely satisfied. "In our more than 16-year history, it has never been as busy as today. We had prepared ourselves for strong growth, but the current figures exceed even our wildest expectations. In total, we are processing more than 3 million presents this Saint Nicholas period." In doing so, Ropers detects a trend. "As soon as Sinterklaas enters our country, we see a strong increase in the number of orders per day. Most of our customers make their purchases on the Monday before Sinterklaas. We notice that more and more people are becoming familiar with the convenience of online shopping and are taking advantage of the opportunity to do some final shopping just before Sinterklaas. It is therefore likely that this peak will continue through Wednesday."
Online shopping remains popular
Despite research showing that consumers do not always dare to shop online because of the risk of late delivery, there is no sign of any reticence. In a press release, bol.com says it has never been so busy. The number of orders increased by almost 50 per cent last Monday. The use of the mobile app on smartphones also increased. Compared to last year, half as many orders are made via phone. On busy days, bol.com attracts 2 million visitors, exceeding all expectations.
