A fierce fire raged in Albert Heijn's distribution centre in Tilburg on Wednesday morning. The fire started in the cab of a truck and then spread to the adjacent premises. The fire in the DC affected the supply of as many as 120 Albert Heijn branches.
The fire brigade rushed to the scene and got the fire extinguished after a short time. The truck which was in the loading dock burnt down completely. As the fire raged only briefly in the distribution centre, the building was still standing. However, there was a lot of smoke in the warehouse.
An Albert Heijn spokeswoman would not yet comment on the extent of the damage. "Our priority at the moment is to inform our shops and customers as well as possible and then get operations up and running again as soon as possible. We are doing that in the first instance by seeing if there are alternative locations from which we can stock our shops," the spokeswoman told Brabants Dagblad. The supermarket chain expects some 120 stores to have less full shelves in the coming days. This applies especially to fresh food.
