Why deliver by air when it can be done underground? Whilst Amazon and Google are busy developing drones, a British company is instead focusing on delivery via pipelines. Mole Solutions believes the concept could offer a solution to emissions in major cities. “If clean water and fuel can be transported underground, why not goods?”, says Roger Miles of Mole Solutions.

The company plans to test the new concept in Northampton. The capsules carrying parcels are powered by electricity and controlled by magnetic levitation. This propulsion system is being developed by the company Maglev, which is also responsible for driving the world's fastest train, the Shanghai Maglev train.

Potential for global cities?
Mole Solutions' concept seems somewhat ambitious, but it is now receiving funding from the UK Department for Environment,Food and Agriculture. If the trial in Northampton proves a success, the company hopes the underground concept will also gain a foothold in countries like India and China. "In countries like these, reducing emissions and reducing traffic on the road is even more important," Miles argues.
