Belgian supermarket Carrefour is to significantly expand its drive through pick-up points. In the near future, customers should be able to go to all 48 hypermarkets and 437 markets and pick up their products ordered online. This is done while the customer waits in the car.

Carrefour started the drive through concept in summer 2013 and has since developed the plan further. Currently, customers can visit 10 shops. The biggest stumbling block the retailer faced was the lack of space in the car parks, making expansion impossible in many cases. A new version should solve this problem. The revamped drive throughs will have a maximum of two parking spaces. In a press release, Carrefour explains the change: "The new infrastructure is much faster and easier to install. Moreover, one no longer needs to submit a permit application to the municipality. All that needs to be done is to paint one or more parking spaces. Then all one has to do is install refrigerators and freezers in which the orders are kept."

How does it work
In the new version, customers park in a pink space and indicate through an app that he or she has arrived. An employee comes to deliver the ordered parcels to the car as far as the boot to which the customer can quickly leave again, after paying.

Albert Heijn follows
Albert Heijn has also now entered the market. The supermarket chain currently has six Pick Up Points in Belgium. Here, customers can pick up their products set on the internet and pay on the spot.
