Timberland is expanding its European distribution centre in Almelo by 13,000 square metres. The current order picking system is also going to be overhauled.
TImberland has been located in Almelo since 2012. For the expansion, developer Aspen Real Estate Investments bought an adjacent plot of 19,3000 square metres. After construction, the shoe brand's DC will cover an area of 52,000 square metres.
Storage space needed
The extra space is intended for more storage, Arnold van der Meer, director of distribution operations, told Tubantia. Timberland intends to speed up its distribution and needs storage space to do so. In addition, eight extra docks will be placed, on top of the current 40 docks.
Order picking system
Timberland is also implementing a new order picking system at the location. Van der Meer would not say much about this to the newspaper. He does say: "We are going to change that drastically. Let's just say that with the current machines, we were ahead of the curve in 2012 and we'll do it again next year."
Completion of the new building is scheduled for spring 2019.
