Decathlon is centralising its Dutch distribution activities in Tilburg. The French sports chain is building a 40,000-square-metre distribution centre there.
From the 'omni-warehouse', Decathlon plans to supply the Dutch shops and ship online orders, according to Brabants Dagblad. The retailer has sixteen shops in the Netherlands - twenty by the end of this year - and currently supplies them from warehouses in Germany and Belgium.
Jobs for students and the elderly
The building will be built in phases of 30,000 and 10,000 square metres. With the distribution centre in Tilburg, Decathlon will create 400 to 500 jobs. In doing so, it is focusing primarily on the existing workforce. "That was an important reason for choosing Tilburg," says Rohan Uijlings, Decathlon's director of real estate. "We like to welcome students, they can grow. But there is also room for older people who have a few hours to spare. The basis is that employees are vital and sporty and enjoy working."
Tilburg is Logistic Hotspot of the Year
The announcement of the construction follows a few days after the Logistic Hotspot of the Year election, where Tilburg-Waalwijk walked away with the win. The region won thanks to the availability of sufficient personnel and the cooperation of the government/municipality in facilitating new logistics activity.
