Deutsche Post is testing collaboration between postmen and delivery robots in Germany. The robots function as 'driving mailbags' and allow delivery workers to carry more mail while being physically relieved.
The PostBOT is currently being tested in the German city of Bad Hersfeld. The robot is one and a half metres tall, can travel up to six kilometres per hour and carries up to 150 kilos of letter mail. "We are constantly looking for solutions to ensure that our employees can continue doing this physically challenging work as they age," said Jürgen Gerdes, ceo of Deutsche Post DHL Group's mail, e-commerce, and parcels division.
Cameras scan the surroundings for obstacles. Meanwhile, the robot's eyes keep an eye on the postman's legs. The robot starts driving only when the postman starts walking. When the postman stops, the robot also stops. The test period in Bad Hersfeld will last six weeks. After the evaluation, Deutsche Post plans to organise another round of tests.
