DHL is building one of the largest distribution centres in Europe in Bochum, Germany. There it wants to process fifty thousand shipments per hour.
DHL's site is an hour away from Venlo. DHL is investing tens of millions of euros in the construction of a 40,000-square-metre distribution centre there. Another 100,000 square metres are then available on the site.
With the logistics centre, DHL mainly wants to serve the German market. "The new sorting centre in the heart of the Ruhr region is an important gateway to one of Europe's largest metropolitan areas," said top executive Jürgen Gerdes. Companies in the region will also benefit from the arrival of the new DC, according to Gerdes. Its proximity to the sorting centre means they can have their parcels collected late into the evening for next-day shipment.
The new warehouse will be completed in autumn 2019 and will account for around 600 jobs. DHL currently has 34 warehouses. A total of one million parcels are sorted there every hour.
