Following on from the service that Amazon, Volkswagen and Volvo previously tested, DHL and Daimler are going to deliver parcels in Germany right into the boot. This is a test of delivery into the boot of Smart cars. The tailgate opens through a special app.

DHL and Daimler will start the new service from September in the German city of Stuttgart. After that, the service will be further expanded to six other major German cities, including Cologne and Berlin.

The service will be called Smart Ready to Drop and will initially be available only to owners of a Smart car. For parcels to be delivered to the backbox, they have to be prepared so that the delivery drivers can open the backbox via an app. The advantage of delivery to the boot is that the owner does not have to be present, the parcel is delivered while the car is parked. For now, it is still a test in which hundreds of Smart owners are participating. They must, as a restriction, park their car no further than 300 metres from the home address.
