DHL started the construction of a new sorting centre in Amsterdam on Tuesday. The DHL Parcel replaces the current DHL terminal in the same business park.
DHL is investing 35 million euros in the construction and furnishing of the new premises. With the new centre at business park Aan de Stegge Twello, DHL expands its sorting capacity. The facility, supplied by Vanderlande Industries, has a capacity of 12,500 parcels per hour. More than six hundred employees will be involved in the inbound, outbound and delivery of parcels.
The building on the Kaapstadweg scores high marks in terms of sustainability. Upon completion, for instance, it will receive the BREEAM Excellent standard for sustainable buildings. By installing 3,800 solar panels, the building provides 80 percent of its own electricity. The remaining electricity required is obtained from the large wind turbines located practically next to the building. The building will be prepared for charging electric trucks and delivery vans.
The new Amsterdam construction is the first in a series that will take place in the coming years. "Investments necessary to manage growth and also intended to expand the service level," DHL says. 30 million euros have already been invested over the past two years and will exceed 60 million over the next three years. Recently, 10 million euros were invested in expanding the fleet by four hundred residential-friendly smaller vans, including one hundred electric ones. Further investments include the physical expansion of the network, more shipping services and IT innovations.
