Carrier DHL is installing a sorting centre in Zaltbommel for online orders in the Netherlands. The construction of the logistics centre involves 84 million euros.
Construction of the centre will start this month, the company confirmed after the Financieel Dagblad reported on DHL's plans last week. The parcel market is still on the rise and the new location is needed to facilitate that growth.
Half a million parcels a day
On business park De Wildeman in Zaltbommel, DHL has secured a 90,000-square-metre plot. The parcel carrier itself speaks of the "largest sorting centre for e-commerce in the Netherlands". Per day, DHL wants to process 500.000 parcels at the new location. The sorting centre enables suppliers to deliver their parcels as late as possible. From Zaltbommel, the parcels are then taken to 150 depots within the Netherlands.
Sustainability
Solar panels on the site's roof are to provide DHL with power. Fully in line with DHL's ambition to deliver emission-free deliveries by 2050, it is installing electric charging points at the sorting centre. Here, electric delivery vans and trucks can be charged.
DHL currently has 15 sorting centres in the Netherlands. It also has 150 local depots. A new sorting centre in Amsterdam is also planned for this year.
International fulfilment platform
Last week, DHL announced the arrival of an international fulfilment platform, allowing online retailers looking to expand into other markets to arrange this through a single platform. DHL's fulfilment platform gives them access to an international network of fulfilment centres and integrated DHL services, eliminating the need for reintegration when entering new markets, according to DHL.
