Warehouse drones are in development that can locate and determine stock in no time. Just a few weeks ago, Amazon was in the news because of the robots the etailer deployed in its warehouse. The etail giant now seems to be outdone by a new technological innovation: the warehouse drone.

Flying
The German Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics (IML) has developed a mobile antenna that can remotely read the information on barcodes or RFID tags, thereby enabling stock levels to be determined. The developers at IML are now hard at work on the further development of this mobile antenna. The aim is for it to eventually be able to fly through the warehouse to provide a complete overview – even in places that are difficult to reach on foot.

Set to be operational by mid-2015
The drones make no noise as they fly over the warehouse. They can navigate autonomously and automatically alert staff when a shortage is imminent. IML expects the flying robot to be operational by mid-2015.

Will robots eventually take over the role of warehouse workers? Read about it in this article from LogistiekProfs.
