Some truck drivers have unjustifiably received high fines in tachograph checks in France since March 2016. This is because the software in the control systems would not take into account double-manned truck journeys. This is according to the organisation Transport in Nood

Drivers must take a rest after 4.5 hours of travel time and record this in the tachograph. On a double-manned trip, the driver enters his rest time (because the other driver is behind the wheel) as 'availability time'. According to Transport in Nood, this was not seen as a break in France, when it should have been. This led to high fines for some drivers.

The European Commission discussed the issue, with a French delegate acknowledging that the problem lies with the control software. Checkers would not have been aware of the malfunction. Shippers' organisation EVO advises drivers of double-manned journeys - until the malfunction is resolved - to still apply the rest periods that apply with a single crew.
