Shippers' organisation EVO is going to reward safety advisors who pay extra attention to working with dangerous goods at logistics companies with an award: safety advisor of the year. EVO is doing this together with the Association of Safety Advisors.
The two parties hope to give working with hazardous substances even greater prominence, attention and recognition. This is necessary because, whilst hazardous substances may have a negative reputation, they are now of great importance. For example, hazardous substances are used to manufacture gloves for surgeons. The substances are also used for refuelling, painting and cleaning.
Thousands of safety advisers in the Netherlands
In the Netherlands, working with hazardous substances is relatively safe. According to EVO and VVA, this is largely due to the work of safety advisers, of whom there are thousands in the Netherlands. These advisers are appointed by companies when a business transports, loads or unloads hazardous substances. He or she is responsible for safety during that process.
Safety throughout the logistics chain
The award will be presented from next year. Advisors who want to stand a chance of winning the title will be judged on skills that further promote safety, such as attention to safety throughout the logistics chain or a strong power of persuasion towards colleagues in other fields.
