The European Union must intervene to solve the problem of stowaways on board lorries. At crossings to Britain and other places in Europe, the problem is still common. EVO has now sounded the alarm.

The television programme EénVandaag paid attention to the problem this week. In it, Jeroen van Veth of EVO also spoke. "Any measure that contributes to efficient supervision, that causes little delay, that ensures drivers are safe, that trucks stay in one piece and that goods stay good, is a good measure." The number of checks have increased causing delays for trucks. Despite increased border controls, many refugees still manage to reach Britain.

Wave
The number of migrants trying to cross from the Hook of Holland to Britain has increased. The Marechaussee published figures showing that there is no absolute increase, rather a wave movement. In December 2015, 130 people were apprehended, last month 120, but in January there were only 25. EVO calls for measures that can counter problems for refugees and the transport industry in the places where illegal crossings are common.

Jungle of Calais
Another bottleneck for transport companies is the clearing of refugee camp in Calais, France. French authorities began clearing "the jungle of Calais" last week. This operation could take up to a month, according to experts. There are more than 1,000 refugees in the tented camp. These immigrants are trying to leave for Britain by train and truck.
