Albert Heijn wants to save kilometres with the opening of an additional hub. The distribution point in The Hague is intended for online orders and should save the supermarket chain some 300,000 kilometres a year.

Albert Heijn uses three national distribution centres in De Meern, Rotterdam and Almere and a number of transhipment points (hubs) to process online orders. From these hubs, smaller delivery trucks drive into the city with the orders. Previously, deliveries were made directly from the distribution centre in Rotterdam to customers in The Hague. The new transhipment point on the outskirts of The Hague should reduce the number of kilometres travelled by delivery vehicles.

The supermarket chain is also expanding its logistics hub in Amsterdam. The point will be moved to a new location where more space is available and more orders can be processed.

Home Shop Center
Albert Heijn also recently remodelled its distribution centre in De Meern. The so-called Home Shop Center is now twice as large as before, which has also significantly increased the number of orders the DC can process. With the expansion, Albert Heijn is trying to respond to the growing market for online groceries
