FNV Transport & Logistics has drawn up a heat protocol for couriers. The protocol explains the rules about a healthy workplace and provides couriers with tips on how to make their work more pleasant during the heat.
According to Richlinde Wackers, director FNV Transport & Logistiek, companies now often take ad hoc measures at the time when it is hot. "The result is a patchwork of small agreements, which are different all over the sector and not always adequate." The union would prefer to see agreements on working during heat formally laid down. The heat protocol is a first step towards this. Ultimately, FNV Transport & Logistics wants to work towards structural agreements that are evaluated and, if necessary, adjusted after each heat season.
Preventing health complaints
The protocol consists of recommendations to prevent health issues during heat. Wackers: "That covers things you need to arrange in advance, such as properly informing employees and buying air conditioners. And when it is hot, you can think about having fewer packages delivered, taking more breaks and, for example, not delivering at the hottest time of day."
App
FNV will distribute the protocol to couriers, employers and clients. The union has developed an app, where couriers can fill in their specific situation. For example, whether they work indoors or outdoors and whether they do heavy work. From there, an advice rolls out that can be discussed with the employer.
