FonQ has moved into a new central distribution centre on the Lage Weide industrial estate in Utrecht. With centralisation and a fully automated packing machine from Neopost, the online retailer aims to improve efficiency.

Due to rapid growth in recent years, fonQ was forced to move into additional warehouses. Until now, the furniture shop's distribution was therefore spread over four locations. With the opening of a new central distribution centre, fonQ hopes to improve efficiency.

The building stands on a 3.5-hectare plot. With an area of 30,000 square metres, the brand-new centre offers twice as much space as before. The building is in the new house style of fonQ, which recently underwent a rebranding.

Sustainability

By opting for energy-efficient LED lighting, lighting presence detection and water-saving measures, fonQ receives a sustainability certificate from BREAAM-NL. "An ecologist has been engaged to encourage the shared use of plants and animals," says Antoine Brouwer, ceo of fonQ. "For example, many green spaces have been installed and you will find several nesting boxes for birds and an insect hotel around the building. We also like to give them a nice home."

Packaging machine Neopost

FonQ chose to automate its packaging process at the new location. A packing machine from Neopost customises shipping boxes, reducing air packing. "The machine is about 10 times faster than manual packing. This method of packing is also beneficial for postal companies. Because the packages are made as small as possible and are less heavy due to the absence of padding material, more orders can be transported at once," says Brouwer.
