From 1 July 2016, a minimum wage for truck drivers will also apply in France. Following Germany' s lead, France hopes this will make competition fairer for the transport sector.

Foreign truck drivers who drive and load and unload in France are often much cheaper than French drivers who receive the minimum wage of €9.67. Transport companies therefore tend to use foreign drivers. To prevent this, all drivers in France must receive at least the minimum wage by 1 July. This does not apply to truck drivers who drive around the country without loading or unloading.

Transport companies must be able to prove that they pay their driver the minimum wage. On inspection, the driver must also be in possession of his employment contract. In addition, companies are required to have a representative in France who keeps the documents for a year and a half after the work has been carried out.
