Parcel and freight service GLS has invested €5.9 million in expansion and modernisation of its largest depot in Rotterdam. The location can now handle twice as many parcels as before.
Due to an increase in parcel and freight volumes, GLS Netherlands was in need of space. The logistics provider also expects an increase in parcels for the peak season.
The depot covers an area of 66000 square metres after the refurbishment. The number of loading and unloading doors has been increased from 72 to 137. A new sorting facility ensures faster processing of parcels. Pallet shipments are sorted by the logistics provider in a separate 1,900-square-metre warehouse. GLS claims that the capacity gain through efficient space utilisation has increased to almost 100 per cent.
Direct connections to depots at home and abroad
Additional national and international scheduled services to and from Rotterdam should save GLS time. Thus, direct connections to depots Netherlands and to Belgium will be set up.
Extra jobs
The depot currently employs 40 GLS employees and 85 drivers and delivery staff via transport partners. GLS expects to need an additional 40 drivers in the future.
