Trade and manufacturing companies would do well to take a closer look at their transport planning now that Germany has introduced border controls on the border with Austria. EVO writes that on its website. The shippers' organisation also advises transport companies that they check their trucks carefully the moment they return.

Germany has introduced border controls as the country struggles to cope with the large influx of refugees. Indeed, some 5,000 refugees crossed Austria's border with Germany on the night of Saturday to Sunday. The largest number of checks are therefore taking place at the border with Austria. At the border posts, cars are randomly checked. This has already caused many delays.

Checking trucks
The shippers' association believes that companies that transport their products themselves should secure returning cars and check them properly for possible intruders.

Keeping a grip on transit times
According to EVO, many trucks are also driving back to the Netherlands from Italy via Austria. These trucks therefore face delays in their production process. This is an even bigger problem because a lot of cheese and milk is transported from Italy. Companies therefore do well to keep in close contact with their foreign relations. That way, they can keep a grip on lead times.
