Large webshops are increasingly in need of highly trained staff. A UWV roundup of five large online shops shows that, besides logistics staff, they are especially in need of ICT professionals.
UWV gathered information from webshops Coolblue, bol.com, Wehkamp, FonQ and Picnic and found a growing need for ICTs, buyers and logistics staff. Over the past four years, the number of employees in the online shopping landscape increased 16 per cent annually to over 60,000 in 2016.
Logistics employee must be versatile
During the holiday season, demand for logistics staff is especially high. Webshops need logistics staff who can handle multiple tasks, such as processing incoming and outgoing goods, packing products and processing returns. Web shops seem to have difficulty finding suitable logistics staff, partly due to the negative image of the profession. It is often physically demanding work and working hours are irregular.

ICT shortage
In addition to lower-skilled logistics personnel, online shops also need middle-skilled personnel, such as administrative staff. They are also in need of highly skilled ICT staff, such as data analysts, developers and testers. Due to the tight labour market, online shops are forced to fill these positions with workers from abroad.
Switching is difficult
The UWV notes that the type of jobs at webshops is very different from those at physical shops. This makes it difficult for shop staff to 'transition'. Working in customer service at webshops is often the best fit.
