FNV is taking action against insurance company TVM's plan to place cameras in truck cabs. The trucks are meant to improve road safety, but FNV believes that this violates drivers' privacy. The union has therefore launched a signature campaign.

TVM will hold the trial with drivers of Kuijpers Transport from Veghel, among others. Fatigue and distraction are major causes of truck accidents. The cameras should signal when a driver is not paying attention.

'Equipment actually causes distraction'
According to FNV, the cameras are not the solution. Besides the lack of privacy, even more equipment in the truck would actually create distractions. The union believes that better planning by transport companies should be investigated. Shorter working weeks could make drivers more alert.

Images will not be kept
To Transport Online, Kuijpers Transport argues that it is not a camera but an eye tracker, which is supposed to keep an eye on whether a driver is wearing to sleep or is on his mobile phone. The images would not be saved.
