A warehouse will be built in the German city of Hanover this year to store lithium-ion batteries. These batteries are kept as stock by sales organisations of electric-powered cars. The batteries are to be kept in condition and will even be used as a stable energy supply in Hanover, writes EVO.

The warehouse, to be built in Herrenhausen district, will house 3,000 battery modules. The batteries will not only be stored, but also kept ready for use by a cycle of charging and discharging.

Energy company
The warehouse is an initiative of Enercity which is part of Stadtwerke Hannover and Daimler's subsidiary Accumotive. Enercity is able to use the batteries as an energy buffer in the city's power supply. The city of Hanover can make good use of the buffer to cope with increasing fluctuations in power generation from wind and sun. These fluctuations are currently handled by fast-spinning turbines powered by fossil fuels. All batteries together have a storage capacity of 15 megawatt hours.

Private use
Mercedes-Benz, too, sees bread in additional energy storage of these batteries. The German company is considering offering the extra capacity to private individuals who can use it for private use.
