Shippers paid around 3 per cent more wage costs in the first nine months of this year than last year. Social charges also rose slightly. Shippers, meanwhile, did benefit from the lower diesel price.

This is according to EVO's annual report 'Cost Development in Road Transport', published on 11 October. Wage costs rose by an average of 2.75 per cent in 2016 and social charges by 0.5 per cent. 39 per cent of shippers' total costs currently consist of wage costs.

Meanwhile, shippers are paying less for transport due to low oil prices. According to policy advisor Patricia de Wilde, there is a slight benefit for the shipper. "Let's take diesel oil costs. For an average road haulier, these costs are about 28 to 30 per cent of total operating costs, assuming a 23-tonne vehicle and 100,000 km per year. So fuel costs have a big impact on the haulage rate. On average this year, the diesel oil price has remained below 1 euro, while in 2015 it was 1.08 euro on average."
