IKEA will start all-electric delivery in five major cities worldwide. In Amsterdam too, the housing giant is doing away with diesel trucks.
Next year, IKEA will introduce 25 electric trucks and five electric cargo bikes in the capital, according to Alberic Pater, sustainability manager at IKEA, in De Financiële Telegraaf.
"We notice that truck manufacturers are still somewhat hesitant to build electric trucks. That is why we are investing in them ourselves to help them with this,'' said Pater.
IKEA is also switching to electric transport in Los Angeles, New York, Paris and Shanghai. The retailer has set a goal of completely emission-free delivery by 2025, which involves more than just replacing diesel trucks, says Pater. "Electric trucks have less range. So we also need to build a hub where cars are electrically charged at the same time as loading goods.''
