Ingram Micro is building a distribution centre in Tilburg for Bijenkorf. The sustainable building, which will have an area of 41,553 square metres, replaces Bijenkorf's distribution centre in Woerden.

Bijenkorf and Ingram Micro recently extended their partnership for ten years. Ingram Micro will both ship parcels to online shoppers in Belgium and the Netherlands and supply Bijenkorf's seven shops.

Bijenkorf currently operates from two distribution centres: a distribution centre in Woerden for in-store supplies and Ingram Micro's distribution centre in Waalwijk for online orders. The new location will centralise logistics, where Ingram Micro expects to ship over 14 million items a year by 2020.

BREEAM Outstanding

Ingram Micro signed an agreement with HVBM Vastgoed for the realisation and lease of the new distribution centre. During construction, the parties are aiming for the international BREEAM Outstanding standard. The building will be equipped with energy-efficient and gas-free climate control and sustainable lighting.

Employment Tilburg

The distribution centre will be completed in mid-2019 and is expected to bring hundreds of jobs to Tilburg and the surrounding area. Initially, the DC will accommodate 300 employees. In time, this will grow to 600 employees. Ingram Micro has now started recruiting staff.

Closing DC in Woerden

Earlier this year, Bijenkorf already announced its intention to reorganise its logistics. The distribution centre in Woerden will therefore close its doors in 2019 to make way for the central DC. "Keeping one central stock in a new distribution centre means that goods are quicker at the location where they are needed, whether for the webshop or one of the shops," the department store explained. With the closure, 143 jobs will be lost.
