The ports of Rotterdam and Amsterdam are to further intensify their cooperation. The two ports have been working together for several years, but expect to serve customers even more by working together more. Rotterdam is Europe's largest port, Amsterdam is ranked number ten.
Extending contract
In 2010, the two ports concluded a cooperation contract. That cooperation has now been extended for another five years. The harbour masters think there are mainly benefits to be gained in the field of joint purchasing and exchanging information on the availability of pushed barges. To coordinate activities properly, both ports already use the same port management system.

Cooperation offers benefits
Rotterdam Port Authority director Allard Castelein is looking forward to more extensive cooperation. "By working together more, we work more efficiently and improve the Netherlands' international competitiveness," he said. Besides the benefits for the ports and customers, the cooperation also offers benefits for sustainability, the environment and improving rail transport.
Both ports face a lot of competition from other European ports. The German and Belgian ports, for example, are major competitors for both Amsterdam and Rotterdam.
