Jumbo is moving into a second e-fulfilment centre in Raalte in 2018. The new distribution centre is needed due to the rapid growth Jumbo is experiencing online.
Jumbo already doubled the capacity of its current e-commerce dc in Den Bosch from 12,000 to 30,000 square metres in 2016. However, according to Frits van Eerd, managing director of Jumbo, the supermarket chain will grow out of this distribution centre in the course of next year. This is earlier than expected. An existing, unused location on Almelosestraat in Raalte should accommodate Jumbo's online growth.
Close to customer in the north
The new DC puts Jumbo closer to customers in the north and east of the Netherlands. "In addition, the former distribution centre is already part of our real estate portfolio. So the vacant property will have a new, future-oriented function, with additional employment opportunities for the region," Van Eerd explains the choice of Raalte.
The new distribution centre will be commissioned in spring 2018 and is expected to create 550 new jobs.
National DC in Nieuwegein
Meanwhile, work is underway in Nieuwegein on the construction of a 43,000-square-metre automated distribution centre. Initially, the DC is intended for supplying the physical stores, with e-fulfilment activities to be added later. Construction of the building should be completed in 2020. By then, the current central DC in Elst will close its doors.
