To quell the ongoing driver shortage, transport companies should treat their staff differently. So argues Steve Agg, chief executive at the international Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport. In the run-up to the festive season, many transport companies face a shortage of drivers. This has been the case for years, but according to Agg, there is no easy solution now. "Due to e-commerce and shorter shipping times, more drivers are now needed than before. We need to start realising that these people play a crucial role in logistics and transport.
Better working conditions
Agg is calling for better training for drivers. In addition, roadside facilities need to be improved, and drivers’ working hours and conditions must be enhanced. “If we do that, we might well be looking forward to a stress-free Christmas next year.”
