To quell the ongoing driver shortage, transport companies should treat their staff differently. So argues Steve Agg, chief executive at the international Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport. In the run-up to the festive season, many transport companies face a shortage of drivers. This has been the case for years, but according to Agg, there is no easy solution now. "Due to e-commerce and shorter shipping times, more drivers are now needed than before. We need to start realising that these people play a crucial role in logistics and transport.
Better working conditions
Agg advocates better training for drivers. In addition, road facilities should be better and working hours and working conditions for drivers should be improved. "If we do that, we might actually have a worry-free Christmas next year," he says.
