It seems to be becoming an annual tradition: ahead of the busy Christmas period, Amazon warehouse workers are laying off work again. The workers want higher pay and therefore went on strike last Monday. It appears to be the first strike in a new series.
Around 1,000 workers are said to have taken part in the strike, from almost all of Amazon’s distribution centres in Germany. These include centres in Bad Hersfeld, Rheinberg, Werne and Graben. The strike was deliberately timed to coincide with Halloween. According to the Ver.di trade union, this is because every day is a ‘nightmare’ for Amazon staff due to the demands imposed on them by the e-commerce giant. The union has already announced that it will organise more strikes if Amazon fails to meet the workers’ demands. The question is whether this will be effective. Over the past three years, the company’s employees have gone on strike regularly, but this has not yet led to a pay rise or an improvement in working conditions.
