Business activity among entrepreneurs in the transport and logistics sector decreased slightly in the first quarter of 2016. However, the financial position of companies did improve and business confidence also increased. This is according to figures from TLN's business survey.

The decline in activity was small and was reported to be mainly among small companies in road freight transport. Large and medium-sized companies actually noted more activity compared to the end of 2015. Among self-employed persons, the number of orders remained the same as in the last quarter of 2015.

Vacancy rate at highest level since 2008
Meanwhile, the number of vacancies in logistics is also growing. Over 22 per cent of companies have one or more vacancies open. In doing so, the vacancy rate currently stands at 2.6 per cent (the number of vacancies compared to the number of jobs filled). This is the highest rate since the third quarter of 2008. For drivers, the vacancy rate is even higher, at 2.7 percent. For non-driving personnel, it is at 2.4 per cent.

Outlook positive
Transport companies are optimistic about the future. This is thought to be mainly due to a well-filled order book for the second quarter. TLN therefore expects the Dutch economy to continue to develop positively.
