Montapacking recently started using Microsoft's HoloLens when order picking. These are mixed-reality glasses, which project 3D visualisations into the physical environment.
The glasses - developed by Microsoft in 2015 - project visuals, animations, data or directions onto the wearer's image. The big difference with virtual reality is that reality does not fall away with mixed reality glasses.
Montapacking hopes to achieve efficiency gains in its 10,000-square-metre warehouse with the use of glasses. The e-commerce logistics provider has many shelves with coding in its warehouse. Employees now have to virtually memorise the location. With a HoloLens, the employee is guided to the right place in the warehouse via animation. In addition, Montapacking expects that the employee will soon be able to scan products with the glasses, just by looking at the product.
According to IT manager Johan van der Slikke, the HoloLens gives a lot of opportunities especially when interacting with humans. "Robotisation means: pushing boundaries. A small deviation of a product in our warehouse and a robot no longer understands it," Van der Slikke said. "A human works flexibly and dynamically, especially in combination with the HoloLens." Montapacking expects the glasses to be commonplace at all the company's warehouses within two years.
