Logistics service provider Nedcargo is keen to expand in Alphen. The company has plans to build a distribution centre next to Alpherium, the container port in Alphen aan den Rijn, reports Omroep West.

Nedcargo wants the distribution centre at the Steekterpoort business park to be up and running within two years. Talks are currently being held with the municipality to purchase the land at the business park. If the application is approved, construction will start as early as after the summer.

More operations
The new centre should further expand the company's operations at the Alpherium container port. Nedcargo now frequently works with Heineken to export beer to the United States. To this, the operator now wants to add food imports by barge. By using barges, the company aims to take 10,000 trucks off the road and thus operate in a more environmentally friendly way.

Residents fear nuisance
Residents fear nuisance from the construction work. The centre is expected to be six to nine hectares in size and will cause the necessary noise nuisance, local residents expect. Nedcargo says it will stay within regulations and expects to create more jobs, allowing Alphen to benefit from the expansion.
