Logistics locations in the Netherlands score higher than those in Germany, Poland and Belgium. Locations in our country are often a bit more expensive, but companies also get more in return. This is according to research by Buck Consultants commissioned by Netherlands Distribution Country.

The study compares nine key Dutch logistics centres with centres from cities such as Duisburg, Liege and Lille. That comparison shows that the Netherlands scores high due to a good physical infrastructure of roads, water and railways. Tax conditions in the Netherlands are positive, partly due to the ability to defer VAT payments, and labour laws are flexible. For example, the Netherlands deals with night work flexibly.

One area of concern is space for large distribution centres. The researchers believe that the Netherlands should make more space available for warehouses of more than 40,000 square metres, with room for European, regional and e-commerce activities. These activities are increasingly being combined in one location. Large warehouses are also needed for large online players such as bol.com. Online retailers store many small products and need capacity to process returns.

The study argues that logistics companies should focus on IT solutions that increase productivity. It also advises companies not to focus on lower wages, but rather on better use of labour.
