The turmoil surrounding brexit has not done goods exports to the UK any favours. Exports fell 0.5 per cent last year compared to 2018.
Goods worth 40 billion euros were exported to the UK last year, figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) show. Exports of goods produced in the Netherlands were up 0.9 per cent. Transit to the UK, however, fell by 2 per cent, resulting in a drop at the bottom.
Since the brexit referendum in 2016, export value to the UK has fallen in relative terms. In 2015, the year before the referendum, exports to Britain accounted for 8.7 per cent of total Dutch goods exports. Four years later, the figure is still 7.7 per cent.
The Netherlands ranks as the fourth largest supplier of goods to the UK after Germany, the United States and China. Agricultural products make up a significant part of Dutch exports to the UK, as do oil and gas, phones and medicines.
