Nedcargo's planned distribution centre in Alphen aan den Rijn may be off the rails. The customer for whom the distribution centre was intended has dropped out.
This has also dissolved the agreement between Nedcargo and the municipality of Alphen aan den Rijn, reports broadcaster West. The municipality has made Nedcargo a new offer to buy the land, which Nedcargo, which is now looking for new partners, must make a final decision on 15 February. In that case, the logistics provider would buy the 10 hectares of land in phases. For the company, it is the only chance to build a large distribution centre right next to the Overslag Terminal Alphen (OTA).
Distribution centre next to port was to encourage waterborne transport
The planned distribution centre has occupied minds in Alphen aan den Rijn for some time. In 2016, when Nedcargo announced the plans for the new DC, residents feared inconvenience from the works. The city council nevertheless gave permission for the construction of the 60,000-square-metre building. A new logistics centre next to the port would encourage waterborne transport. Nedcargo expected this to save up to 10,000 truck trips per year.
