Nike's new logistics centre in Laakdal was officially opened yesterday. With a floor area of 250,000 square metres, the Nike European Logistics Center (ELC) is one of the largest and most extensive distribution centres in Europe.

The new distribution centre serves the wholesale, retail and e-commerce divisions in Europe. The ELC already existed, but in 2013 Nike decided to expand the centre by 40,000 square metres along the Albert Canal in Ham to support the brand's European growth plans.

Grant
Nike worked closely with the Flemish government to realise the new building. The project was also expected to bring significant benefits to Kampen, Limburg and Flanders. Nike therefore received grants from the Flemish government, including funding for the training of new staff. Nike is hiring 500 additional people for the new building.

Minimal ecological footprint

Nike itself refers to the building as the ‘building of the future’, partly due to its minimal ecological footprint. Since 2006, the site has been powered by green electricity from wind and solar energy and has a waste sorting scheme. The expansion along the Albert Canal ensures that the maximum volume of goods can continue to be transported by inland waterway, reducing the number of lorry journeys by 14,000 per year.
