In the Schiphol region, trucks will start communicating with traffic lights via a 4G network. By tuning the timing of traffic lights to approaching trucks, unnecessary braking and acceleration of trucks can be avoided.

The application should lead to a reduction in emissions, fewer delays, lower fuel costs and more reliable travel times, the Province of North Holland said in a press release.

Traffic lights and trucks will communicate with each other via KPN's 4G network. The system calculates at what time the truck will pass the traffic light, and the on-board unit gives the driver speed advice so he does not have to stop. Meanwhile, the traffic light adjusts the green time, if necessary and possible, so that the truck can pass the intersection safely and without stopping.

In the trial, two traffic lights have been fitted with new software. This number may be extended to other intersections in the future. The number of trucks equipped with an on-board unit could also easily be expanded.

The trial involves a collaboration between the province of North Holland together with KPN, VolkerWessels company Vialis, Dynniq, FloraHolland, Rietveld, Dobbe transport and the Beter Benutten programme.
