Shoe chain Omoda now packs online orders to size. Thanks to a wrapping machine, the retailer reduces air in parcels by 46 per cent.

Since the end of May, two packing machines have been in place at Omoda's distribution centre in Zierikzee. One machine assembles the shipping boxes. The other machine glues the lid on the filled shipping box, at the same height as the shoebox inside.

Less air, fewer emissions

With a customised packaging process, Omoda reduces air in parcels by 46 per cent. A smaller parcel means more space in trucks; according to the retailer, loading volume has increased by 25 per cent. "So where we used to need four trucks, now there are only three." That saves 130.6 tonnes of CO2 emissions on an annual basis, equivalent to 871 plane roundtrips from Amsterdam to Paris.

Peak moments

According to Omoda, the packing machine does not replace staff. All orders are still manually picked and put into shipping boxes. The biggest impact the packing machine has is to reduce the workload. "We can handle peak moments whistling, with our distribution staff having extra time to focus on delivering quality," says the retailer, which was recently nominated for the Logistic Webshop of the Year title. There, gift shop Greetz eventually walked away with the win.
