The transport and logistics sector is on the rise and that is creating confidence among entrepreneurs. In the second quarter, the sector's turnover increased by 4.7 per cent compared to a year earlier.
This is according to figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS). All branches in the sector saw their turnover increase, with freight forwarders' turnover growing the most at over 7.5 per cent. In couriers, road haulage, aviation and inland shipping, turnover increased by 5 per cent or more. Loading, unloading and transhipment companies were the only businesses in the transport sector that did not have to do without turnover growth. This subsector achieved virtually the same turnover as a year ago.

In the first quarter, turnover in the sector was already up 5 per cent, with the positive figures having an impact on business confidence. As in the first quarter, business confidence stood at 7.5. Compared to a quarter earlier, entrepreneurs are less positive about turnover development in the past three months. On the other hand, they are more positive about turnover expectations for the coming quarter and the development of the economic climate.
In May, June and July, 55 companies had to close their doors. This puts the number of bankruptcies slightly higher than in the first three months of this year. Freight road transport suffered the most with 40 per cent of bankruptcies.
