Ikea is catching up on e-commerce. The housing giant posted a 28 per cent online sales increase last year. Online revenue now stands at 4 per cent of total sales, which rose by "only" 7 per cent.
Earlier this year, the housing giant launched the Click & Collect option. The 'Order and Collect' service allows consumers to place their orders online and often collect them on the same day at a branch of their choice.
Missed the boat
Ikea has only been into e-commerce since 2013. Customers were still faithfully coming to the shop, so the retailer did not see the need for an online shop. In early 2015, top executive Peter Agnjefall admitted that Ikea had missed the boat on e-commerce. "We certainly have not been the first to adapt to the shift in the market," Agnjefall told the New York Times. "But our thinking on this has since changed. "Ikea now has an online shop in 14 out of 28 countries. The retailer is fortunate to have little international online competition in Europe.
