With a second DC, Wehkamp hopes to serve its customers even better. Last Friday, the building in Zwolle opened, which will be linked to the first warehouse.
With the opening, the web retailer will have a total of110,000 m2 of storage at its disposal. With that space, Wehkamp hopes to serve consumers even better and have the opportunity to grow. 'We are a digital organisation and have therefore invested heavily in advanced IT systems at this new distribution centre,' COO Maarten Tibosch said in a press release. 'This allows us to increase delivery reliability to 99.9 per cent.'
Wehkamp's first DC is also in Zwolle, which has 62,000 m2. The new building is heavily geared towards sustainability. 10,000 solar panels were already in place on the first building; with the arrival of this second building, the number of solar panels will be increased to 15,000. In addition, 100% of the building is equipped with LED lighting and electric charging stations have been installed, also for bicycles. Rainwater is used to flush toilets and an ecological garden has been created around the building. This makes the building 30 per cent more energy-efficient.
Other contrivances also make the second building more advanced than the previous one. There are 30,000 pallet locations, 750,000 bin and box locations and over six kilometres of conveyor belt.
There are some 525,000 storage locations and 28 picking stations; the order picking system is fully automated.
