Online supermarket Picnic is expanding in Germany. Picnic's next city to our eastern neighbours is Duisburg, its largest German delivery area so far.

The app-only supermarket has been active in Germany since last year and now delivers in several cities in North Rhine-Westphalia. In May, Picnic opened another hub in Bochum, a city with over 360,000 inhabitants. Back then, the supermarket already indicated its intention to expand to other cities in the Ruhr region. "Every day, we receive hundreds of enquiries from people in Duisburg, Essen, Dortmund and Hamm," said Frederic Knaudt, Picnic's boss in Germany.

Half a million potential customers

So launch in Duisburg will follow in September. The city has almost half a million inhabitants. Picnic will initially deliver there with 15 electric trolleys. The supermarket says it is looking forward to the launch. Indeed, never before has it received so many registrations when expanding to a new city.
